A really beautiful brand new to us this season, celebrating its 120 year anniversary this year, this brand has a vast heritage creating fantastic quality clothing which we know you’re going to love. Here’s a short insight into this great French brand -

Petit Bateau is France’s most famous children’s underwear brand and definitely a favourite among all French mothers. The brand produces the highest quality of designer childrenswear including baby underwear, sleepwear and special items such as girls dresses. But now they also produces high quality clothing for women and men based on their own unique design style. Since 1893 Petit Bateau has created garments for everyday living, from the baby romper to the classic mariniere top. They love to use soft fabrics so pieces are always comfortable and perfectly reflects their design ethos.

Petit Bateau was created 120 years ago in Troyes in Champagne by Pierre Valton. The first underpants were launched in 1918 when he decided to cut off the legs of some long johns his son was wearing to provide him greater comfort. The name “Petit Bateau” was apparently given when two years later, Pierre Valton heard his son singing ”Maman, les petits bateaux qui vont sur l’eau ont-ils des jambes?…”
(“Mummy, do the little boats on the sea have legs?”). Jump forward to the beginning of the 1970′s, Petit Bateau invented the very famous milleraies “coloured” stripe which remains to be a fashion classic today and can be seen in every collection. The brand in 1988 was bought out by Yves Rocher a world leader in plant origin cosmetics pushing its expansion worldwide. Also interestingly in 1994 Karl Lagerfeld dressed Top Models with Petit Bateau children’s Tshirts under their Chanel suits. This marked the start of the ‘Lolita’ trend, which lead to the Petit Bateau T-shirt becoming a must-have in every French woman’s wardrobe. The brand then expanded into womens and menswear over the years and is now available all over the world.

This year they are celebrating their 120 year anniversary with special collaborations, and limited edition printed pieces that we have received including the fab screen printed boat sweatshirt.
